Top VPNs Indonesia Review 2017 – PC/Android/Mac/Gaming

Hello there! Living in Indonesia, Indonesian Guyinternet privacy is an important subject to me. Internet use has been growing fast here, but unfortunately, we don’t have anywhere near the privacy or access as citizens in many other countries. Government officials can and have blocked websites because of alleged negative content without going through any sort of legislative review process. This includes the popular video site Vimeo, which was blocked on the grounds that it had pornographic content.

Across the entire country, government agencies can monitor people’s internet activity without getting a warrant. And Indonesia has strict internet defamation laws. Even negative comments about someone or something online can result in jailtime and a hefty fine. That’s what happened to one law student who made critical comments about a town on social media.

The only way you can get around the strict internet censorship laws here and keep yourself safe from surveillance is through a VPN, and that’s why I’ve made this list of the best VPNs in Indonesia. A VPN can allow you to access sites that Indonesia has blocked under its archaic regulations, and it can encrypt your data while you use the internet.

Warning – Don’t Use Free VPNs!

Most VPNs have a small monthly fee for their use, but you’ll find some free ones, as well. Here’s the thing – a VPN needs servers to operate, and those servers come at a cost. For a free VPN to stay in business, it sells the data of its users, which means something you’re using to guard your privacy is actually compromising it. Stick to VPNs with a monthly fee that will protect your information.

In an effort to keep the Indonesian government and my ISP from spying on me, I’ve checked out many VPNs. The following list is my top three best VPNs in Indonesia, and I also included another VPN that I’d recommend you avoid despite how popular it is.

Avoid Free VPNS - Don't Have Your Info Sold to 3rd Parties
I would strongly recommend not utilizing free VPNS servers for some simple reasons. User data is routed through a central hub that collects and aggregates information. This information is then sold to 3rd parties. User information is commoditized and sold to pay for the “free” VPN. If you’re not looking to spend money on a VPN, I would suggest simply not using one.

1. Express VPN Provides Speed and Security

Express VPN LogoExpress VPN is well-respected by experts in the online community and people around the world, as it has over 10 million users. What stands out about Express VPN is its number of servers, which is over 1,500, making it the most of any VPN on this list. It has those servers in 94 countries.

One benefit of all those servers is that they deliver excellent internet speeds. There are plenty of VPNs that can keep your information private, but do so at the expense of speed, making internet use a chore. Express VPN is the fastest VPN I’ve found, and I’ve had no issues using it to watch movies on Netflix. Since Express VPN has a policy of not keeping logs on its users, you don’t need to worry about your information or internet activity getting compromised, and its encryption is top of the line.

VPNs aren’t too expensive, but I should mention that Express VPN is a bit more than most other VPN providers. You’ll pay $8.32 every month if you get a one-year plan, but Express VPN offers a moneyback guarantee for the first 30 days. This is the VPN I use, but if you want something a bit cheaper, the next two Indonesia VPN options will fit the bill.

Split tunneling, dedicated IP, concreate encryption and 24/7 customer support are but a few of the things that make ExpressVPN the best choice for a VPN in Indonesia. Advanced features like their Speed Test are an added bonus to this dynamite service.

2. VyprVPN Is a Strong Choice with Unique Benefits

Vypr VPNComing in second is VyprVPN, which boasts more than 700 servers in 70 countries. Now, that is fewer servers than the other VPNs on this list, but it’s important to note that VyprVPN owns and controls all of them. That’s very uncommon in the VPN world, and what it means for you is that none of your information will end up on any other company’s servers. From a security standpoint, VyprVPN is as good as it gets. Although I found Express VPN to be a bit faster, VyprVPN is no slouch, either, and you’ll still be able to stream videos.

Government firewalls can be a big obstacle for VPNs, and this is another area where VyprVPN excels. It has a “Chameleon Stealth” technology that it created for the express purpose of getting past those government firewalls, even the best of the best in China’s firewall. Although just about any VPN will have mobile device support, VyprVPN has fantastic apps available. Pricing is extremely competitive with this VPN, as its base plan costs $5 per month when you get it for a year. Like Express VPN, you can get your moneyback anytime in the first 30 days.

Exceptional speed for broadband internet and unique protocols make VyPr VPN a strong contender for that number one spot. VyPr’s unique Chameleon protocol ensures that you will not be blocked from viewing content online. VyPr also puts an end to throttling. An excellent choice among the current VPNs.

3. Pure VPN Is Another Good Option

Pure VPN LogoIf you’re not sold on the first two choices, PureVPN rounds out my list. It has its more than 750 servers in 140 countries, and it’s a balanced choice without any speed or security issues. It even uses army-grade protocols to protect your data.

Pricing is similar to VyprVPN, with the monthly fee running you just $5.75 per month when you get this VPN for a year. One area where PureVPN isn’t quite as good as Express VPN or VyprVPN is its moneyback guarantee, which only lasts for seven days.

OpenVPN, automatic protocol selection and 256-bit encryption are just a few of the wonderful features that Pure VPN possesses. It’s an established service with a trusted following and widespread availability (750+ servers in 140+ countries).

4. Hide My Ass Has Privacy Issues

HideMyAss LogoIf you’ve looked around much for the best VPNs in Indonesia already, you’ve probably heard about Hide My Ass. Even though it’s a bit light on features, it still has 820 servers spread among a whopping 190 countries, and it’s inexpensive at $6.56 each month with a one-year commitment. The problem with Hide My Ass is that it has a history of releasing user information.

Hide My Ass is based in the UK, which has stricter surveillance laws requiring VPNs to keep certain customer data for a minimum amount of time. The VPN discloses that it could record your data in its privacy policy. There have been multiple instances of Hide My Ass giving data on its customers to police, and that’s why I’d advise you to choose another VPN.

HMA is a disreputable service that’s earned itself a flawed reputation among avid VPN users. They offer no ad-blocking and frequently stockpile log sessions. Not a worthy choice for the serious VPN consumer.

What is a VPN?

how-vpn-protects-youVPN is a shorter way of saying virtual private network, and that’s exactly it provides. Your computer is connecting to one of the VPN provider’s servers to browse the internet. All data you send and receive this way gets encrypted by the VPN.

Why Do I Need a VPN?

With all the internet surveillance that goes on in Indonesia, you never know when someone is monitoring your internet use. It could be a government agency, it could be your ISP or it could be a cybercriminal. Hackers are especially likely if you connect to a public Wi-Fi network. Since a VPN encrypts your data, no one can steal it or spy on your internet activity.

how-encryption-worksA VPN will also help you get around censorship and region-specific content restrictions. When you connect to a VPN server, it’s like you’re browsing the internet in the location of the server. Let’s say you come across a site that the Indonesian government has blocked, such as Vimeo. You use a VPN and connect to one of its servers in the United States, allowing you to access the site. This will also enable you to view content that’s region specific for the US. That means you’re no longer limited to the Netflix library in Indonesia.

Are VPNs Safe To Use?

VPNs are safe, assuming you choos

e the right provider. There are plenty of reputable VPN providers out there, including my three

choices above. The only time you could run into problems is if you choose a VPN with a bad reputation or no reputation at all. Plenty of people set up VPNs that will sell data to third parties or infect your computer with viruses, which is why it’s important to do your homework.

how hackers can steal your information

Can I Use a VPN on my Phone or Tablet?

The good news is that most VPNs will work with mobile devices, including phones and tablets. Of course, it will depend on the device, but most VPNs will cover any Android or iOS devices, Windows Phones and any Blackberry devices that aren’t too old.

The only potential issue to keep in mind is that applications are notoriously bad from a privacy perspective. These transmit a substantial amount of personal data when you use them, regardless of whether you use a VPN. To get maximum protection when you’re using a VPN with a mobile device, I’d recommend keeping the apps closed. Try mobile web portals instead of apps if you need to use certain services. It may not be as convenient, but then your VPN can protect your personal info.

With its speed, Express VPN is perfect for Netflix, but HotSpot Shield also works very well.

My Final Thoughts

There’s a reason VPN use is so high in Indonesia, even among people who aren’t the most tech savvy. The internet is very restricted here, your information isn’t safe and the defamation laws can lead to harsh punishments. Using a VPN is smart and it will allow you to check out much more content online. See which of the VPNs I mentioned fits your budget, provides the features you need and has an interface you like.
